The Aspen Music Festival and School, the International Music Camp, and Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) Esports are all offering summer education programs for young people.
The Aspen Music Festival and School, celebrating its 75th anniversary, is highlighting its family and education programs this summer. The festival aims to explore Aspen's impact on the musical and personal development of musicians over the past 75 years through its free youth and family programming. Children's tickets for concerts are $5 for ages 6-18, and the lawn is free and open at all times for listening. The festival will also host Tunes and Tales, a musical storytelling partnership with the Pitkin County and Basalt regional libraries, and Music on the Mountain every Saturday on top of Aspen Mountain. It will also host a Mariachi celebration in collaboration with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet's Folklorico and Mariachi Sol de mi Tierra. The festival will offer education programs such as Sing Play Move, one-on-one instrument lessons, and a three-day Mariachi workshop. The festival aims to provide music education opportunities for a variety of interest levels and connect with the community.
Meanwhile, the International Music Camp at the Peace Garden is preparing to welcome about 1400 campers this summer, along with close to 180 instructors and 60 support staff from across North America for June and July. Camp Directors Tim and Christin Baumann are getting ready for the first session, which will begin with the Indigenous Cultural Aesthetics Events Program. The camp offers programs in choir and band, orchestra and jazz band, dance and piano, and more for young people between the ages of 10 and 19. The programs are one week in length, but some campers attend for multiple weeks. The camp also offers a University Preparatory Program for students interested in pursuing music degrees. Recent facility upgrades include new lighting in the Howard Hall building, funded by a $13,000 grant from the Brandon and Area Community Foundation. Registration is still open for the various programs.
In addition to music education programs, HPU Esports is hosting STEM-focused summer camps for kids aged 9-15. The camps run during the first two weeks of June and the last three weeks of July at HPU’s Aloha Tower campus in Honolulu, Hawaii. The camp offers hands-on gaming experience, creative tech workshops, and outdoor activities designed to foster teamwork, critical thinking, and digital citizenship. Campers will explore gaming genres and learn about careers in the Esports industry. The camp costs $400 per week with lunch included or $375 for those who bring their own lunch. A three-day mini-camp is also available at the end of July. The camp hours are from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. with an optional extended free play until 5 p.m.
Both the Aspen Music Festival and School, the International Music Camp, and HPU Esports provide valuable music and gaming education opportunities for young people during the summer months.
