The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has allocated US$270 million to Tajikistan for the construction of the Roghun hydropower plant, a significant project aimed at enhancing the country's energy independence and sustainable economic development. The agreement was signed on December 20, 2024, in Beijing by Tajikistan's Minister of Finance Faiziddin Qahhorzoda and AIIB Vice President Konstantin Limitovsky. This funding is part of a larger financing effort, with a total project cost of US$500 million, which will co-finance Lots 1 and 3A of the Roghun project and rehabilitate 55 kilometers of roads [e7dbdc3d].
In addition to the AIIB's support, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) recently approved a financing package of up to $20 million for the First MicroFinanceBank of Tajikistan (FMFB) to bolster green lending and support entrepreneurship among youth and women. The signing ceremony took place in London on September 25, 2024, with EBRD Managing Director Francis Malige and FMFB CEO Mirzosafar Safarov in attendance. This financing package includes loans aimed at green economy initiatives and programs specifically targeting youth and women in business, marking the largest financing package offered to a financial intermediary in Tajikistan to date [b0d7b0c5].
Furthermore, the European Union (EU) has announced a separate allocation of $141 million in grants and concessional loans to Tajikistan for the development of priority sectors. This decision followed a meeting between Tajik Minister of Economic Development and Trade Zavqi Zavqizoda and European External Action Service Deputy Managing Director Luc Devigne. The priority areas discussed include trade, energy, industry, healthcare, education, rural development, border security, green economy, establishment of technoparks, digitalization, and the completion of the Roghun hydropower plant [380921ac].
