This week, as billions of people around the world celebrate the Lunar New Year, a unique delicacy is capturing attention in Vietnam. Dong Tao chickens, also known as 'Dragon Chickens', have become all the rage during the holiday season. Originating from Dong Tao village, these rare chickens are known for their large scaly red feet and can weigh up to six kilograms when fully grown. The Lunar New Year is a particularly popular time to enjoy Dong Tao chicken, as they are believed to bring good fortune and wealth to their owners [99f60107].
The demand for Dong Tao chicken has been rising sharply in Vietnam, driven by the increasing number of wealthy individuals in the country. A fully grown dragon chicken can be sold for up to five million dong (S$275) or even 10 million dong. The legs of the chicken are considered the most valuable part. Dong Tao chickens have a crunchy texture, distinct fragrant aroma, and rich flavor, making them a sought-after delicacy. They are best cooked by steaming. While the chickens are now raised beyond the village, those raised in Dong Tao village and fed with paddy rice and corn are said to have the best taste. However, production has not yet met domestic demand, and Dong Tao chicken is not available in KFC restaurants [99f60107].
The addition of Dong Tao chickens to Lunar New Year celebrations in Vietnam adds an exciting element to the festivities. As people gather to celebrate the Year of the Dragon, they can also enjoy this unique and rare delicacy, further enhancing the cultural significance of the holiday.
