Former top official for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), Shane Desguin, has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the agency and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, claiming wrongful termination and retaliation. Desguin alleges that he was forced to resign from his position as chief of staff after refusing to comply with directives that he believed violated the law or were inappropriate. He accuses DeSantis and FDLE officials of violating the privacy rights of migrants, withholding public records, and calling for the arrests of neo-Nazi protesters in violation of their First Amendment rights. The FDLE conducted an internal investigation that found Desguin guilty of gross misconduct, including sexual harassment, workplace discrimination, and brandishing a firearm. Desguin had supervised Patricia Carpenter, with whom he had an extramarital relationship. He objected to orders to collect information on migrants in Jacksonville and raised concerns about false imprisonment or kidnapping. Desguin also objected to the arrest of neo-Nazi protesters and the withholding of DeSantis' travel records. He was placed on administrative leave and later retired. Desguin's attorney claims that the Internal Affairs report was completed after his retirement and that the allegations against him were not pursued by the State Attorney's Office. Desguin is seeking compensatory damages, legal fees, and job reinstatement [d866fbf7].
