The Bangladeshi government has approved the conditional export of 3,000 tonnes of hilsa fish to India in anticipation of the upcoming Durga Puja festival. Exporters are required to obtain necessary permissions by September 24, 2024, to facilitate this trade. This decision comes after the interim government had previously opted against hilsa exports to ensure adequate local supply. The approval was based on a letter from the foreign ministry, as noted by the commerce ministry. Kazi Belayet Hossain from the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA) mentioned that the government typically relaxes the hilsa export ban during Durga Puja, a significant festival for many in India. In the fiscal year 2023-24, Bangladesh exported 664.86 tonnes of hilsa to India, generating $7.71 million in revenue. This is a decrease compared to the previous fiscal year, where 1,376.42 tonnes were exported, bringing in $13.68 million. The hilsa fish, a staple in Bangladeshi cuisine, holds cultural significance and is highly sought after during festive seasons, making this export approval a timely decision for traders and consumers alike.
