Spotify Wrapped 2023 is here, showcasing users' most-streamed artists, songs, albums, and more. A new feature compares users' listening habits to those of people in different cities, such as Berkeley, Burlington, Cambridge, and Isla Vista. However, the comparisons have sparked surprise and memes on social media as Spotify Wrapped suggests that people who listened to indie rock in 2023 should live in Burlington, Vermont, and Isla Vista, California. Isla Vista, a college town near UC Santa Barbara, has a thriving music scene that fosters a sense of community and offers a unique alternative to the party culture. Over 50 bands, primarily made up of UC Santa Barbara students, host free concerts at I.V. houses almost every weekend during the school year, curating an expansive assortment of sounds, from surf rock to screamo punk. The creativity of UCSB students and I.V. residents contributes to the town's musical diversity, and the sense of community between musicians is strong, with bands often collaborating, sharing equipment, and supporting each other. However, limitations on practicing and performing have hindered some musicians' engagement with the music culture. UCSB's Parking Lot 22, previously a popular practice space, was closed off to bands due to noise disturbance. Santa Barbara County also implemented amendments to ordinances that restrict party-related issues in I.V., including selling tickets and alcohol and limiting the maximum number of attendees. While some bands agree with the amendment that prohibits ticket sales, others express concerns about capacity constraints. Despite these challenges, bands in Isla Vista hope that the music scene will continue to evolve and remain a platform for community and inclusivity. [884eecbc] [6141f62c] [1c40f325]
