After months of lockdowns and online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, international students are slowly returning to colleges in the United States, including El Camino College. The number of F-1 visa students at El Camino dropped by 42.21% between spring 2020 and spring 2022 but reversed and rose by 8.61% from spring 2022 to fall 2022. Other California community colleges also saw a rise in F-1 visa students. However, El Camino College has been facing challenges in attracting students back due to the high cost of living in the US and competition from other English-speaking countries. Despite these challenges, international students play a crucial role in the US economy, contributing over $40 billion during the 2022-2023 academic year. El Camino College alone received $11.8 million from international students and supported 52 jobs during the same period. This growth in international student enrollment marks the second consecutive year of record growth following the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
