The Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan is working towards accreditation in the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) [819ccf15]. In a meeting held on May 27, 2024, between the Authorized Representative for Human Rights in Turkmenistan - Ombudsman Yazdursun Gurbannazarova and the Secretariat of the Subcommittee on Accreditation in GANHRI, the parties discussed issues related to the planned accreditation and strengthening of the institutional capacity of the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan [819ccf15]. The Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan considers accreditation in GANHRI a priority goal and aims to achieve it through cooperation with international partners, such as the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) [819ccf15].
The Strategic Plan of the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan for 2024-2028 sets the task of preparing and submitting an application for accreditation to GANHRI with the support of the Asia-Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (ATF) and other partners [819ccf15]. Bilateral cooperation with OHCHR was also discussed in a meeting between Yazdursun Gurbannazarova and the Regional Representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Central Asia, Matilda Bogner, on May 28, 2024 [819ccf15].
Accreditation in GANHRI would provide the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan with recognition and support from the international human rights community, further strengthening its role in promoting and protecting human rights in the country [819ccf15].
In Azerbaijan, the Ombudsman's Office held an awareness event on the state guarantee of rights and freedoms of persons with disabilities as part of the "Human Rights Month" initiative [215073f4]. The event, which took place under the Social Services Agency of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Republic of Azerbaijan, aimed to promote the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities [215073f4]. Ayten Tarverdiyeva, head of the protection sector of the rights of persons with disabilities, spoke about the obligations stipulated in the Convention and the new powers given to the Ombudsman for the promotion of its implementation [215073f4].
