Devgad mango growers in Maharashtra's Konkan region have adopted a technology-driven solution to combat the adulteration of their premium hapus (alphonso) mangoes. They have introduced unique stickers on each mango that reveal a code when partially peeled. Consumers can verify the authenticity of the mangoes by sending a photo of the sticker to the farmer's cooperative. This method helps differentiate the premium brand and ensures that consumers get the real Devgad mangoes. The stickers have a unique code, with only half of it visible on the front and the rest behind the sticker. The farmers are happy with this method as it also allows them to track where their produce is being consumed. The Devgad hapus mangoes are vulnerable to adulteration as cheaper varieties from other states are mixed with them. The geography of Devgad, with its laterite rocky area and high iron content, contributes to the unique aroma and taste of the mangoes. The Devgad Taluka Growers Cooperative Society plans to make the tamper-proof seal mandatory for all farmers in Devgad to identify their mangoes as Devgad alphonso. [227e8cdb]
