In a bid to drive food security and promote agricultural trade in Africa, Bureau Veritas, a global leader in testing, inspection, and certification services, participated in the Intra-Africa Trade Fair (IATF) in Egypt. The event aimed to generate $43 billion worth of trade and investment deals and featured discussions on agriculture, harmonization of standards, and compliance and regulation.
Bureau Veritas emphasized the importance of determining suitable crops for unexploited areas through services like soil testing and satellite crop mapping. They highlighted the need to link Africa's agricultural development to sustainable practices and ensure the longevity of food security. To uphold quality standards for agricultural products, Bureau Veritas has collaborated with Afreximbank to develop the African Quality Assurance Centre in Nigeria, a testing laboratory. They stressed the importance of product standards and regulations to protect traders and society, and the need for consistency of standards to instill consumer trust.
The panelists at the IATF also emphasized the requirement for infrastructural development, including a solid railway transportation system and economic corridors, to support the agricultural sector. They highlighted the role of infrastructure in facilitating the movement of agricultural products and promoting trade.
Bureau Veritas is committed to education and talent development in Africa. They have partnered with universities and initiated learning programs to cultivate an environment of trust where citizens can buy local quality food brands made in Africa for its people and exported globally.
These efforts to enhance conformity and compliance standards, along with the focus on sustainable practices and infrastructure development, contribute to the goal of achieving food security and promoting agricultural trade in Africa.
