Former MLB star Steve Garvey is calling on Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon to prosecute those responsible for the violence outside a Jewish synagogue in Hollywood. Garvey, who recently visited Israel as part of his campaign efforts, met with the family of an Israeli hostage held by Hamas and visited locations attacked by Hamas. He criticized the leadership for failing to prosecute those who broke the law and disrupted campuses amid anti-Israel unrest. Gascon's office condemned antisemitism but remained silent on prosecuting criminal acts related to the clashes. Garvey's call for prosecution comes in the wake of scattered bouts of violence and protests in Los Angeles over the fighting in the Middle East. The protests escalated into violence, with people throwing kicks and punches. LAPD officers in riot gear formed skirmish lines and declared unlawful assembly. The chaos lasted for hours until around 5 p.m. One person was arrested during the incident. President Joe Biden and Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the violence and targeting of the synagogue. LA Mayor Karen Bass called the violence abhorrent and pledged to provide additional patrols in the Pico-Robertson community and outside houses of worship throughout the city. [358e63b6]
