In Hong Kong, a concerning trend has emerged as approximately 90% of vulnerable residents have not received a Covid-19 vaccination in over a year. A recent survey conducted by the Covid-19 Public Health Concern Group revealed that among 571 residents aged 30 and older with chronic illnesses, many are unaware of the risks associated with their vaccination status. The survey, conducted between October 16 and November 16, found that 60% of respondents recognized their higher risk of severe infection, yet 62.7% of those who had not received a booster felt it was unnecessary. Additionally, 40% expressed concerns about potential side effects of the vaccine. Alarmingly, 191 individuals reported not having received a booster in over two years, and 13 respondents had never been vaccinated against Covid-19. This situation is particularly critical as Hong Kong approaches the winter flu season, which typically sees an increase in respiratory illnesses. Between November 24 and November 30, three Covid-19 deaths were reported, highlighting the ongoing threat of the virus. Despite over 6.9 million residents having received at least one Covid-19 vaccination, only 62,743 have received a sixth dose. Experts are emphasizing the need for improved health education to combat misconceptions regarding the severity of Covid-19 and the importance of vaccinations, especially for those with chronic health conditions. The Covid-19 Public Health Concern Group is urging residents to get inoculated as the winter months approach, stressing that vaccinations can significantly reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization.
