Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced the introduction of the Bangabandhu scholarship, which will provide cadet training scholarships to 10 cadets from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and African Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The scholarships will be offered at the country's five government marine academies. The announcement was made during a meeting between Prime Minister Hasina and the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasc. The IMO gladly accepted the offer and the meeting also discussed topics such as shipbuilding, ship recycling, maritime crimes, and climate issues. The IMO emphasized the importance of promoting gender equilibrium in the marine academies in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is the largest ship recycling country and has demonstrated its commitment to environmentally safe ship recycling by acceding to the Hong Kong Convention. [2d2941a9]
