Version 1.14 (2024-04-17 01:22:07.824000)
updates: Asian stocks fell on Tuesday as concerns grew over the region's vulnerability to elevated interest rates and rising geopolitical tensions. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index dropped as much as 2.2%, marking its largest decline since August of the previous year. Traders are worried that Asia will be more negatively impacted by persistently high borrowing costs due to a strong US economy, as well as rising oil prices. The region is also facing pressure from a stronger dollar and its energy dependency. Lingering doubts about China's growth recovery, following mixed first-quarter data, have further dimmed hopes for a sustained improvement in Asian earnings. The Asian stock gauge's recent gains have been driven primarily by an expansion in valuations, while earnings estimates have remained largely unchanged. The delay in the Federal Reserve's rate hike is expected to cause central banks in China, South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Taiwan to postpone their own rate cuts. Additionally, China's recovery prospects appear uncertain, as disappointing retail sales and industrial output in March have shown signs of fading momentum.

Version 0.1 (2024-01-19 07:44:30.750000)
updates: Asian markets rise following tech-led rally on Wall Street. Traders' concerns about the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates early or by as much as hoped this year were soothed. US data on inflation and jobs, along with comments from central bank officials, have contributed to the decline in equities in January. However, strong forward guidance from chip titan TSMC has boosted tech firms including Samsung and Nvidia. Traders have lowered their bets on a March interest rate cut to a little more than 50 percent. The gains in New York were largely driven by a surge in tech giants including Apple, Nvidia, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Markets in Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong, Sydney, Seoul, Singapore, and Wellington were up, while Shanghai extended its losses. Key figures include Tokyo's Nikkei 225 up 1.6 percent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index up 0.5 percent, and Shanghai's Composite down 0.4 percent. The dollar/yen is up at 148.36 yen, the euro/dollar is up at $1.0885, and the pound/dollar is down at $1.2703. West Texas Intermediate is down 0.1 percent at $73.88 per barrel, and Brent North Sea Crude is down 0.2 percent at $79.91 per barrel. Asian shares bounced on Friday, buoyed by a rally in global chipmakers, while the yen was set to end the week with heavy losses as investors pared back bets the Bank of Japan would soon abandon its uber-easy policies. The stock rally is set to spill over to European markets, with EUROSTOXX 50 futures up 0.4%. In Asia, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rallied 1.0% on Friday, but was still down 2.7% for the week as jitters about the global interest rate outlook dominated. Taipei-listed shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) surged 6.3% after the chipmaking giant projected 2024 revenue growth of more than 20%. Japan's Nikkei rose 1.3% to just a touch below a 34-year top hit on Wednesday. The yen lost 0.2% to 148.48 per dollar, having fallen almost 2.5% for the week to the lowest level since early December. Chinese stocks slipped again after bouncing off five-year lows a day before on signs of state support. Chinese bluechips fell 0.3% while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index eased 0.2%. Data overnight showed that U.S. weekly jobless claims unexpectedly dropped, adding to signs of the resilience in the economy which tempered some hopes of a March interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve. Futures were still leaning towards a first rate cut in March from the Fed but with less conviction at a 55% probability, down from 70% last week. Meanwhile, the total easing this year stood at 140 basis points. Despite strong US economic data and rising bond yields, technology stocks, particularly in the Nasdaq 100, continue to rally. The Nasdaq 100 hit a fresh all-time high, with chipmaker TSM seeing a nearly 10% jump in stock price. The rally in tech stocks is driven by robust AI-demand and the softening expectations of a rate cut by the Federal Reserve. The stretched long positioning in Nasdaq stocks makes them vulnerable to a selloff, but the strong demand and AI-demand should keep the technology space well-funded. In the forex market, the USDJPY is extending gains above the 148 level due to weak economic data from Japan and a broad-based USD strength. However, buying the USDJPY at current levels is considered risky. The EURUSD is rangebound between its 50 and 200-day moving averages, with the possibility of a medium-term bearish reversal. Gold prices struggle to gain momentum amid uncertainty over Fed rate cuts and elevated US bond yields. The UK Retail Sales dropped more than expected, putting pressure on GBP/USD, while EUR/USD remains steady below 1.0900. Overall, the market seems dismissive of the signs and continues to favor technology stocks despite the strong economic data and rising yields.
