updates: The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) is working to create more awareness on the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) to ensure compliance. The NDPA, signed into law on June 12, 2023, provides a legal framework for the regulation and protection of personal information. Non-compliance could result in public distrust and loss of business opportunities. The commission is focused on building a culture of compliance and is engaging with organizations and stakeholders to increase awareness. Private sector compliance is above 55%, while public sector compliance is at 15%. The commission has received about 1,000 complaints on data breaches and has conducted investigations in various sectors. Remediation fees totaling N400 million have been collected. Challenges include lack of awareness and the difficulty of tracking data privacy violators operating from unknown locations. The national commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) Dr. Vincent Olatunji, has described the Data Protection Act as key to opportunities in the Nigerian digital ecosystem and a great incentive to business and investment into the country. Olatunji said this during a media chat to mark the one year of the implementation of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, in Abuja on Tuesday, stressing that the bill passed by the 9th Assembly and assented to by President Bola Tinubu on June 12, 2023 was a major milestone. He noted that the law has boosted opportunities in job creation, training, workshops and awareness, adding that the law has become Nigeria’s global brand in capacity building in the area of data management. He also said that because of the law Nigeria has won the right to host all Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) in Africa in May next year. This, he said, would not have been possible if Nigeria did not have this law.
