Version 1.37 (2024-06-25 20:55:34.910000)
updates: Consumer sentiment index from the University of Michigan dropped to 65.6 in June. The Conference Board's consumer confidence index also declined to 100.4 in June. Concerns about high prices and weakening incomes drove the decline in consumer sentiment. Despite the drop in consumer confidence, the labor market remains healthy, with a strong job gain of 272,000 jobs added in May. There are signs of weakening in the labor market, such as the lowest level of job postings since 2021 and a rise in the number of Americans receiving unemployment benefits for seven straight weeks. The U.S. economy slowed sharply in the first quarter to a 1.3% annual pace. Consumer expectations of a recession in the next year pulled back in June after rising the previous two months. The decline in consumer confidence is impacting President Joe Biden's reelection bid. Inflation cooled substantially in May, with the cost of gasoline, new cars, and car insurance falling. Despite the decline in consumer confidence, the U.S. economy is still in good shape by historical standards. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4% in May, but employers added a strong 272,000 jobs. Consumer spending in May inched up just 0.1% from April due to high prices and interest rates. Some big retailers are offering discounts this summer to encourage spending. Labor-market resilience is driving consumer spending, underpinning the economy despite the Federal Reserve’s hefty interest-rate hikes in 2022 and 2023 to quell inflation. The mixed survey from the Conference Board showed consumers' perceived likelihood of a recession over the next 12 months retreated in June after rising in April and May. Fewer consumers planned to buy vehicles and household appliances over the next six months, but more planned to go on vacation. Confidence improved among consumers under 35 and those 55 years and older. The survey's labor-market differential widened to 24 from 22.7 in May. Consumers' 12-month inflation expectations fell to 5.3% from 5.4% in May. The share of consumers planning to buy vehicles over the next six months fell as did that of those intending to purchase big-ticket items, mostly clothes dryers and TVs. Purchasing plans for washing machines rose and were unchanged for refrigerators. More consumers planned to go on vacation compared to April, with most eying domestic destinations and intending to fly rather than drive. While a weakening in confidence does not bode well for consumption going forward, sentiment has been depressed for some time even as households have continued to spend.

Version 0.47 (2024-02-27 20:27:30.359000)
updates: Consumer confidence fell unexpectedly in February, interrupting a three-month rise. Concerns about inflation, rising interest rates, and geopolitical conflicts overshadow positive economic indicators. Buying plans for major purchases and vacations declined. Economists caution that January's data is not enough to change the overall narrative of a growing economy accompanied by moderating inflation. The US economy has a generally positive outlook, with strong growth and easing inflation. American consumers are feeling less confident this month as concerns over a possible recession grew, despite most indicators pointing to a healthy US economy. Consumers' short-term expectations for income, business, and the job market fell, signaling a possible upcoming recession. The decline in consumer confidence is surprising given the resilience of the economy in the face of higher interest rates and inflation. The Federal Reserve is expected to start cutting rates later this year to further boost the strong economy.

Version 0.18 (2023-12-20 16:59:23.620000)
updates: Consumer confidence rose in December to the highest level in five months as sentiment on both the current and future situations improved markedly. Spending plans showed overall increases for all categories, and there was more vacation spending than previously recorded. The economy continued to add thousands of new jobs while spending stayed robust even when confidence was at a multiyear low. The Conference Board's measure of consumer confidence fell to its lowest level in six years in August. The health of the American consumer remains strong as outlays on retail sales closed out the year on a positive note. The Conference Board's confidence index dipped to 100.2 in November from 102.2 in the prior month. Inflation in Canada stayed steady at 3.1%.
