Residents of the village of Radinac in Serbia have been living with heavy air pollution and a thick coating of red dust since Chinese company HBIS bought a steel mill near the city of Smederevo eight years ago. The pollution has led to increased cancer cases and high levels of arsenic, chromium, and lead in the dust. The Serbian Environmental Protection Agency has ranked Smederevo as one of the most polluted cities in the country. Activists are planning to take their case to the European Court of Human Rights, blaming Chinese investment in Serbia for the pollution. The steel mill, owned by HBIS, employs around 5,000 people and was sold to the Chinese company in 2016. China has made significant investments in Serbia and neighboring Balkan countries in recent years. [f95343cd]
